On January 14, 2020 @SearchLiaison announced on Twitter that there is a new look for Google’s search results. Their look for mobile will now be continued through onto desktop searches.
“The format puts a site’s brand front & center, helping searchers better understand where information is coming from, more easily scan results & decide what to explore.”
— Google Search Liaison @SearchLiaison
Favicons, Logos and website branding included

This new look for Google Search gives a visual refresh which allows for favicons, logos and other website branding to be included in the search results. Providing searchers with a quick way to help identify where information is from.
Paid advertising will also include a bolded ad icon next to the website address instead of the favicon. (As shown in the above screenshot image, the first listing on the search results list is a paid ad). This is Google trying to be more clear about sources of information.
Because this now makes website branding and logos even more important; Website designers and owners can identify their preferred icons for organic search results at https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9290858.
Website owners are warned that this will not guarantee that Google will display your preferred icon. If Google elect not to display or can’t find or use any favicon on your site they will only display a generic icon as shown below.
