Getting Your Site Listed Is Not Enough

If you know that your website is listed in Google, Bing and the other Search Engines but you are not seeing many visitors or traffic to their website. It could be time to review your website’s keyword met-tags and SEO strategy.

Do you know what SEO terms your site is seeking and ranking for?

Do you understand what these last sentences mean? Or have I just stunned you with techno-babble when you just want more customers?

Fear not, I will break it all down and explain more below….

I have seen many sites built by graphics designers which look smart. But fail to bring in any visitors (or search engine traffic). Leaving their business owners scratching their heads. Why are these flashy new sites not increasing their customers? Even worse is when their sites are not even being found in any search engine results!

Business owners hired the best graphics designers with the hopes that sleek looking websites bring in new website visitors to convert into online customers. Sadly, not all graphics designers understand about setting up the correct keyword meta-tags and SEO strategies that are required.

Three quick SEO tips

Firstly you want to make sure that the search engines know what are the correct keywords. Does your website designer have a good understanding of your business and it’s services? There is a big difference between dog grooming and dog training. Does your designer understand this?

Secondly, you want to make sure that your business is showing up in local area maps. When your website lists the correct NAP (name, address and phone number) details it helps your customers to find you. Plus the more NAP citations your business has, the greater credibility you’ll have. Multiple online NAP citations builds up the verification that you have a real business operating at that location. Credibility Google looks for to increase your website ranking.

Thirdly, are your meta-tags completed? Meta-tags are the invisible tags within website code which help the Search Engine robots read your website. There are many different types of tags. Tags are given to name and distinguish between different elements. Helping to define links, page titles, keywords, images etc.

Designers who focus more on the appearance of a website, may not focus on including meta-tags and or even keywords. I have seen sites where designers failed to write anything in these tag fields or worse, left them out of the code entirely.

Mostly when the designer made use of lots of images and photos. Does your graphics designer know how to maximise when text will appear with alt-image tags? If you know some basic html, alt-image tags can be the most easy to fix and edit.

Extra SEO strategies

The default setting for WordPress Websites is to list pages and posts with a numerical title. This may help with organisation structure but it does nothing to help explain to robots or human readers what subjects are discussed on the page. Of course, if you know how, this can always be changed to optimized titles.

When a website is strategic about what terms or phrases are included in the titles, headings and keywords for every page it also improves search engine rankings. This also goes back to when I asked you if your designer understands your business and it’s services.

It is no good if your website ranks well for “Medical Centre” if your business only offers Massage and Nutrition services. People expect Medical Centres to have qualified doctors not just masseurs. If your website is not ranking for terms that are relevant to your business, it will not matter if your site ranks number one. You won’t get as many website visitors and that is just bad for business.

Finally, fine tuning a website with a sitemap and using canocial URLs to avoid duplicated content penalties are the final pieces of the puzzle.

All these strategies combine to help the search engine spiders find what they want. Ultimately, you will get higher rankings in search results, when search engines can find what they want and believe your site to be more relevant than other site on the same subjects.

The higher your site ranks, the more potential leads and customers will find your website to grow your business.
